After a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Harrogate in their EFL Trophy opener, Mansfield Town will be eager to get back on track when they host Newcastle United Under-21s on Wednesday night. Nigel Clough’s side haven’t played since a 1-1 draw with Reading earlier this month due to a postponed league fixture, meaning they should come into this one refreshed and ready to go.
Currently sitting 12th in League One, the Stags have shown flashes of quality this season but have lacked consistency, winning just once in their last eight matches across all competitions. With League One remaining the main focus, Clough is still expected to rotate his squad slightly, giving chances to fringe players such as Dom Dwyer and Max Dickov.
Despite that, Mansfield’s superior experience, physicality, and home advantage should make the difference against their young opponents.
Newcastle’s youngsters face a tough test
It’s been a difficult start to the season for Newcastle’s Under-21s, who were hammered 6-2 by Huddersfield in their first group match and sit near the bottom of Premier League 2 with just two points from six games.
While they did manage a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Boston United in the National League Cup, Robbie Stockdale’s side have struggled defensively, conceding 17 goals already this term. Promising striker Sean Neave, with three goals in six outings, remains their main attacking threat, but the Magpies’ inexperience is likely to be exposed again here.
Prediction: Mansfield 3–1 Newcastle U21
Tip: 1 and Over 2.5 Goals
