Villa aiming to finish the League Phase in style
Aston Villa enter the final round of the Europa League League Phase in a commanding position. Already qualified directly for the last 16 and sitting second in the 36-team standings, Unai Emery’s men have enjoyed an exceptional European campaign, winning six of their seven matches. Their 2-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle last weekend further underlined their strong overall form, keeping them firmly in the domestic title race.
Villa Park has become a European stronghold once again, with the team winning 19 of their last 22 home games in all competitions. Even with expected rotation from Emery – given their qualification is secured – the depth of the squad should keep the hosts competitive and ambitious. A seventh straight European home win is firmly within reach.
Salzburg’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread
On the other hand, RB Salzburg travel to Birmingham with everything to play for. The Austrian champions sit 28th in the League Phase and must win in England to stay alive in the competition. Their recent 3-1 win over Basel revived faint hopes, but their European away form and record against English sides (D2 L6) remain serious concerns.
The visitors also lack match rhythm after a long Austrian winter break, and their inconsistent Europa League performance – five losses in seven matches – puts them at a clear disadvantage against a high-flying Aston Villa side.
Prediction
Tip: 1 (Aston Villa win)
Given Villa’s home dominance, superior squad quality and Salzburg’s struggles in Europe, the hosts are strong favourites to claim all three points.
