Bologna searching for stability
Bologna’s return to European football has been mixed so far. After qualifying for the Europa League by winning the Coppa Italia, Vincenzo Italiano’s men opened their group campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa – the second year running they left Birmingham empty-handed.
Domestically, Bologna sit mid-table in Serie A after a run of inconsistent results. Their 2-2 draw with Lecce at the weekend highlighted both their attacking potential and defensive fragility, as they let slip a late equaliser against the league’s bottom side. However, at Stadio Dall’Ara, the Rossoblù have historically been tough to beat, losing just twice in 31 European fixtures – though those defeats both came in their last three home matches.
With Riccardo Orsolini providing creativity from the wing and Santiago Castro expected to lead the line, Bologna will look to tighten up defensively while edging their way back into the group standings.
Freiburg strong but cautious away from home
Freiburg arrive in Italy on the back of a solid 2-1 win over Basel, with Patrick Osterhage and Maximilian Eggestein getting on the scoresheet. Julian Schuster’s side are in decent form overall, unbeaten in four matches across all competitions, and they rarely fail to score – their last blank came back in March.
Still, away from home in Europe, their record is less convincing. The Black Forest club have failed to find the net in each of their last three Europa League away matches, and with defensive leader Philipp Lienhart still uncertain, stability at the back will be a priority.
Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals
Both teams are well-organised but not particularly prolific in Europe. Bologna have struggled to score consistently, while Freiburg’s away record suggests caution. The safest value lies with Under 2.5 Goals, pointing towards a tight and low-scoring contest at the Dall’Ara.
