It’s win or go home for Austin FC, who return to Q2 Stadium on Sunday night hoping to stay alive in their best-of-three playoff series against Los Angeles FC. The Verde and Black fell 2-1 in the first leg, conceding late to leave themselves needing victory to force a decisive third match.
Nico Estevez’s men have struggled offensively in recent weeks, scoring one or fewer goals in five straight MLS games, including the playoff opener. However, Austin have been much stronger at home, collecting points in 10 of their last 11 matches at Q2 Stadium. They also boast a solid playoff record in Texas, having never lost a post-season game there.
Austin will once again look to Jon Gallagher and Owen Wolff to create chances, while veteran goalkeeper Brad Stuver will need to be at his best to stop LAFC’s lethal attack.
LAFC aim to finish the job
For Los Angeles FC, Sunday presents a chance to wrap up the series and advance to the next round for a third straight year. Nathan Ordaz was the hero in the first leg, scoring the winner to give the Black and Gold a narrow advantage.
However, Steve Cherundolo’s side haven’t been flawless away from home, dropping points in their final two road matches of the regular season and losing their last two playoff games as visitors. Still, their record against Texas teams is excellent, with three playoff wins out of three.
With Son Heung-min and Denis Bouanga leading the attack, LAFC are always a goal threat — though their defence can be exposed away from home.
Prediction
Austin’s desperation to stay alive should make for an open, attacking game. LAFC rarely fail to score, while the hosts are strong at home. Expect goals at both ends in what should be a tense and entertaining matchup.
Prediction: Austin FC 2–2 Los Angeles FC
Tip: Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
