It’s been just over a month since Jorge Sampaoli took charge of Atletico Mineiro, but the expected revival has yet to arrive. Galo are sitting just four points clear of the relegation zone after 25 games, with only one league win under the Argentine so far.
However, their home form offers a glimmer of hope. Atletico are unbeaten in four home matches under Sampaoli, conceding just once during that run. The defensive structure looks more organised at Arena MRV, and Mineiro have yet to lose any home fixture this season in which they conceded first.
Another positive omen — Atletico are unbeaten in 16 straight home games against Sport Recife across all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last three. A win or draw here would also equal their longest unbeaten home streak in the league since last season.
Still, the lack of attacking spark has been evident, with most games staying low-scoring under Sampaoli’s cautious setup.
Recife desperate to close the survival gap
For Sport Recife, time is running out. Daniel Paulista’s side sit 12 points adrift of safety, and although recent performances have been more disciplined, victories remain rare — only two wins from 25 league matches this season.
Recife have shown slight improvement defensively, collecting points in four of their last five games and conceding one or fewer goals in four of those. Away from home, they’ve been stubborn but unproductive, with just eight goals scored on the road all season.
The Leão are historically poor travellers against Mineiro, having not won in Belo Horizonte this century apart from a stunning 6-0 victory in 2000.
Prediction
Both sides are struggling to score freely and prioritising defensive solidity. Atletico’s home record and Recife’s lack of cutting edge point to a tight, cagey affair with few chances.
